Tiffology’s Art: E&J

(@plagueround @dagsav)
In April or May of last year, I had finally gotten around to listening to the Dag Savage debut album (a full year after its release), titled E&J. I knew that I was going to love this album when I heard the second track, called “For Old Time’s Sake”. Johaz comes in with a fearless attitude, raw honesty, and even some vulnerability on this song, because he digs deep to share personal history–the good and the bad–with his listeners, in efforts to let us into his world and what’s shaped him into who he is today. He highlights life events in chronological order, by sharing stories about getting jumped, being molested, having sex for the first time, family problems, getting arrested, getting no love in his city, being a father, and more. I love when a musician, or anyone really, has the strength to go beyond the surface level of their life in their life’s work. Not to mention, this is the first song on the album (I was playing it in order, of course) where I was just wholly captivated by his vivid storytelling and lyricism. So fresh; I was a fan instantly. Exile‘s production is hot, too, of course; dusty, head-nodding drums, chunky brass bits, a bold piano taking the lead, cuts in all the right places… there is no wrong with this one. If I were rating this song, it’d get a 10/10.

Tiffology’s Art: So Dam-FunKy

(@plagueround @damfunk)
Hey, everyone. Not too long ago, Tiffny and I have decided that we are not only going to write about you/musicians/other artists/etc on here (and sharing things that we think are awesome), but we are also going to be sharing things that personally involve us and own endeavors as well. At least, we are going to try to do that a little more often. For example, we each have our own categories under Art (Tiffny’s Art and Tiffology’s Art), where we will be showcasing our digital art and such (oh what, you didn’t know we get down on the artistic front, too?!). We will likely be adding more categories and cool things that pertain to the two/each of us as time progresses (Tiffny’s photography, perhaps), but just thought I’d give you a little heads up since I didn’t really mention that when I shared my Brown Bag AllStars vector series with you awhile back.

The Monsters Are Due On CrayonBeats (part 3)

Good morning, readers! I am proud to announce that the third part in my The Monsters Are Due On CrayonBeats compilation series is out TODAY. If you aren’t familiar with this concept compilation series that I have curated, let me briefly explain what it is.

As an 80’s baby and a child of the 90s, I read the Goosebumps books as a kid and, boy, did a lot of them scare me. In my years, I’ve also seen all of The Twilight Zone episodes, and continue to watch the series when it marathons during holidays. Similarly, they are really cool, innovative creations that tell tales involving themes of horror, thriller, science fiction, fantasy, comedy and beyond–they take your mind into strange and scary situations that are based on dream and reality.

CB Question of the Week: What drives you to create?

This post is for the second question in our Q&A series, called Question of the Week. As you may already know, we will be posting a single question to our social media sites every Sunday, inviting anyone who wants to answer and/or share their experiences. If you missed our first question and the responses we shared, check that out right here (feel free to answer the question in the comments, if you missed it and want to join in).

This Q&A series is our way of getting in touch with creative people worldwide–we want to open the conversation to anyone who wants to join in, not just to those that we already know and have written about on our website. We want to get a glimpse into your life and who you are, while also aiming to inspire and uplift other people who might be able to relate and/or absorb what others are saying.

Tiffology’s Art: Brown Bag AllStars vector series

As a fan of the individual artists within the Brown Bag AllStars hip hop crew, I wanted to express my love for their music by doing vectors of each of them. Over the course of a few weeks, and after gathering reference photos of the guys, I unveiled each finished piece, via my social sites, as they were completed. I decided that I should post it here, too. I had fun creating these, and I’m really happy with the final pieces. Check them out below, if you haven’t already seen them!

N.O.M.A.D – “(((( Yawning ))))” album

Titled (((( Yawning )))), the album consist of 13 beats that pull from genres such as experimental electronic, hip hop, psychedelic rock, and jazz. You’ll even find some vocal segments from him on some of the songs. It’s an extra lovely album, indeed. CrayonBeats Random Giveaway Winners/Prizes

We recently had the whim to give away a bunch of stickers and some artwork to a few of  our readers and followers on our different social media profiles. The giveaway was totally unplanned and in order to win, you just had to comment or tell us you wanted some stickers! Now that we’ve finished the artwork and mailed off the stickers, I thought it would be cool to show you guys the artwork of our winners from each network. Each winner got a pack of CRAYONBEATS stickers and two pieces of digital art from both Tiffology and myself. Check out the artwork below!

Extra Lovely Records – “Extra Lovely Vol. 1” compilation

On May 4th, Pennsylvania emcee/producer Stainless Steele (@stainlessone) released the first compilation of music, from his blog-turned-label Extra Lovely Records. Extra Lovely Vol. 1 is a 14-track collection of songs from the artists: Swarvy, N.O.M.A.D, All Shapes, Sir Froderick, Maf Maddix, Deflon, HeadPiece, Garfunkle, Yikes The Zero, Adam Jeez, Ghost McGrady, MogillaH, Stainless Steele, and Asonic Garcia. You’ll find beats and vocal tracks that expand into the electronic hip hop universe–mixing together sounds of head-nodding boom bap, experimental jazz, smooth psychedelic, to synth-heavy glitch. It’s a cool selection of music that you can kick back and zone out to, headphones on or off.

This is available as a $5 digital download, or you can buy a limited-edition cassette tape for $8 (which comes with the MP3 album, too). Art work was done by Adam Leak, and the cassette layout was done by Tiffology (Hey, that’s me!). Stream the project below, and then make your way to Bandcamp to buy it!

#SongChallenge Day 28: A Song That Reminds You Of Your S/O

Whether you have a crush, are casually dating someone, or have a significant other, there is bound to be a song (or many songs) that will remind you of that person. Maybe you heard that song during a special moment that you two shared, or maybe it’s a song you both really like/hate, or maybe you heard a song that closely resembles the way you feel for them, or whatever the case may be–When you hear it, your mind instantly flashes to their face. This day’s challenge is dedicated to a song that reminds us of our significant others. However, since neither of us have one of those, I named a song that reminds me of someone I have feelings for, and Tiffny shared a song that she hopes to share with someone special. Check ’em out.

#SongChallenge Day 27: A Song You Make Fun Of

I don’t know about you guys, but when I don’t know the lyrics to songs, I tend to string together nonsensical phrases that fit the original lyrics until I decide I’m going to actually take the song seriously enough and learn the real lyrics. I know that this isn’t what the topic is about, but that’s how I (Tiffny) am going to interpret it since if I don’t like a song, I don’t even bother to listen to it, let alone make fun of it. So, here we go.

#SongChallenge Day 26: A Song By Your Favorite Band

Your favorite band is your favorite band because their music excites you. No matter what or where, they have a song you relate to so much that it can send chills up your spine, break you down to tears, or brighten your whole outlook on life. Today’s theme is just that, that one song by our favorite band(s) that changed the world for us. As this is pretty self explanatory let’s get down to business!

#SongChallenge Day 24: A Cover Song

Today’s challenge focuses on the cover song! I don’t know about you, but we love covers. Whether the person approaches the song with a whole different rhythm or melody, strips it down to an acoustic version, or makes subtle differences, it’s often neat to see/hear how other people give new life–through their own voice and style–to an original song, by another musician. Sometimes the cover song is better than the original, sometimes the cover is just as good, and, of course, sometimes the cover doesn’t stack up. But we’re going to talk about songs that fall within the first two categories. Keep reading to find out what our favorites are!
