Aleksandra Denton, known as Shura (@weareshura), is a 23-year-old singer/songwriter/producer based in London. Other than lending her voice to a lot of Hiatus‘ songs (ie: “We Are Ghosts Now“, “Iran Air“, “Fortune’s Fool” and many more), I couldn’t find any solo albums to Shura‘s name… yet. However, she has released two singles this year, and I hope that she’s working on her debut album.
I got put onto her music today, when I saw the music video for her debut single, “Touch“. Craving the romantic touch of an ex lover, Shura’s fragile vocals float over a dreamy, 80’s pop-tinged electronic beat. The sweeping synths, drum claps, and lush keys are hypnotic. I was captivated by the foggy, pastel-colored visual that finds numerous people kissing and exploring their desires through touch–it’s such a beautiful, intimate sight to see. “There’s a love between us still // But something’s changed and I don’t know why // And all I want to do is go home with you but // I know I’m out of my mind”
“Just Once” is the second single and it, too, has that misty, 80’s-inspired pop vibe. Exhausted with a struggling relationship, she considers alone time, getting drunk, and maybe a random hook-up to aid her frustrations. The head-nodding, semi-upbeat chorus is catchy, too: “If you get my name wrong, I won’t get pissed of ’cause // I wish I was somebody else // You know nothing about me, I know nothing about you // But maybe the question mark helps // Have you ever been lost // We could get lost // I wanna get lost“. Be on the look out for more from Shura. I sure will!
