Santigold – Who Be Lovin’ Me ft. ILOVEMAKONNEN
So, Santigold just dropped the video for Who Be Lovin’ Me from her upcoming album 99 ¢ents (1/22/16). It seems like such a long time since I’ve heard any of Santigold’s newer music and I can’t lie, I didn’t immediately love this at first listen. I honestly think the song isn’t as good as what I remember her music to be, but I’d also be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling it (after a few listens).
After asking myself why didn’t this track grab me straight away, I came to the conclusion that it’s the featured artist. I feel like he drags the song down and should have been either placed after Santigold’s verse or cut entirely…only because in comparison it’s a lazy verse (lyrically and performance wise) and I fell like if you’re going to be on a track with someone so melodically and lyrically unique, you gotta show out.
In a successful collaboration, there has to be a little friendly competition between artists, and if everyone on the track isn’t giving their A game, then you end up with something so-so. Luckily the track can be edited to only be Santigold if you’re felling how I’m feeling about it. On another note, the cameos in the video were fun.
