Donna Missal – “Hotline Bling” (Drake cover)

After Drake‘s “Hotline Bling” song/video came out, the internet flooded with memes, jokes, and parodies. Then there are song covers, of course, which I haven’t really heard (not that there aren’t a ton, but I didn’t go out searching for them, nor were any sent to me -emoji praise hands here-). I’m not a big fan of Drake to begin with, so I welcome covers of his songs sometimes and, today, I heard one that I liked!

Donna Missal is a New Jersey-based singer that released her first single a month ago, called “Keep Lying“. In it, I heard her smoky pop vocals slowly unraveling over a mellow rhythm of drums and guitar, soon breaking out with rocker howls in the chorus. That same vocal range–from warm and soft to powerfully aggressive–is heard in her cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling”, and I like it. It’s a grungy pop-rock cover, and my first introduction to Donna’s music (I listened to “Keep Lying” afterwards), so I’m diggin’ her. Give it a listen and see what you think.
