Issue 09: Love, This Might Work

Much like our 8th issue, this 9th issue combines with our latest music compilation called, Love, This Might Work. We put out an open-call through Instagram, tasking musicians with the challenge to write/record a brand new song that was inspired by love (and essentially required a “listen to with your significant other/lover/crush at night” vibe). This resulted in 4 brand new songs by Arizona hip hop duo Obey The Altar Native (made up of producer DenOne and emcee Obey); Colorado-based rapper D.Cure, who covers new terrain by singing; Ohio native rapper Dirty Needles; and Japan-based rapper Sonny B. The bulk of this issue features exclusive interviews, and art (designed by us), featuring all 4 song artists from the compilation where you’ll read more about their songs, get a behind-the-scenes look to creating, and what else they’re doing. There are also album reviews of Calvin Valentine‘s Plush Seats, Elaquent‘s Celebrate Life!, Phonte‘s No News Is Good News, Moment‘s Moments, Paolo Nutini‘s Caustic Love, Michael Kiwanuka‘s Love & Hate, Kelela‘s Take Me Apart, Camille‘s Oui, The New RespectsHere Comes Trouble, and Lando Chill‘s Maya, Maia, Mayu. Get the scoop on singers BOA and Kyan Palmer in the SOUNDCHECK section. Art interviews with Sara Kuan, Lourya Sparks, and Erek Oyarzun.  50 pages.

Limited Edition art prints

To coincide with the magazine and Love, This Might Work compilation, we have designed illustrations that were inspired by the compilation’s music makers and they will be sold as limited edition art prints! There will be a total of 4, each one inspired by Obey The Altar Native, D.Cure, Dirty Needles, and Sonny B and their songs. One will be added at a time, so keep checking back here to see new ones, or follow our social media accounts to get the updates.

We launched our first ever issue of CrayonBeats Magazine in 2013. They started out as an extension of the blog, creating a space for us to elaborate on our monthly faves, flex our design eye and, of course, to put you on to some dope art. As of issue #08, released in 2017, we have combined our magazine with an accompanying music compilation.

Issues #01-06 are archived on Issuu, should you want to read them over there. However, if you’re into free stuff and reading on the go, you’re welcome to download every issue for free by hitting any of the download links at the bottom (right click, save as).

All issues can also be purchased in print, if you’re into tangible, collectors items.
