Issue 08: Issa Throwback

This is the first issue (and not the last) where we have combined it with one of our music compilations. For our Issa Throwback compilation, we put an open-call out through Instagram, tasking musicians with the challenge to write/record a brand new song that was inspired by one that was released during the year that they were born. The result is 9 tracks created by musicians that can rap, sing, and spin. All of our 80’s babies artists are: Shortrock, QM & Grip Grand, Corina Corina & Willie Green, LXL, ADA, MC Bravado & Brandon “BeaLack” Lackey, J.Quest & Po’Safe, Elliott Niezel & Elusive, and D.Cure. All of them are interviewed inside for the bulk of this issue, and there’s also a mixture of informative articles and interviews with the original 80’s artists whose music was used for inspiration. The 80’s inspiration artists inside include The Funky 4+1 (interview with MC Sha-Rock), Phil Collins, Jona Lewie (interview), Double Dee & Steinski (interview), Billy Ocean, Schoolly D, Egyptian Lover (interview), and Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo. There is also an interview with visual artist Ivan Beslic! 58 pages.

We launched our first ever issue of CrayonBeats Magazine in 2013. The (relatively) bi-monthly issues started out as an extension of  the blog, creating a space for us to elaborate on our monthly faves, flex our design eye and, of course, to put you on to some dope art.

Issues #01-#06 are archived on Issuu and can be read there (link below) or you can go ahead and downloaded them free of charge. However, any issue after #06 cannot be read free of charge. Digital issues are typically $5, while physical print issues are about $15+ (always comes with a free digital copy). All issues can be purchased in print.
