Shortcircles (Matt Tammariello) is a producer from Escondido, California. As a teenager, he was influenced by artists such as Sadat X, Common, and MF DOOM, which lead him to writing raps and forming a rap group with a friend. Shortly after, he was introduced to ambient music, and, with his father, he turned his garage into a studio. This is when he transitioned from rapping to making beats. Fast-forward–past moving out of Escondido to the Bay, past going to college and experimenting with recording techniques–to when Matt translated his melancholy emotions of a lost friendship into an EP called “The Mapzzz” (for the website Mapzzz). Shortcircles was born.
His inspirations shifted to Four Tet, Teebs, Floating Points, and DJ Shadow, and he describes his music as a “peaceful sound. I try to make music that is as honest to myself as possible.” Shortcircles was eventually approached by a friend, and Plug Research member, Elephant & Castle, and PR brought him aboard the label.
This brings us to his self-titled 6-track EP. Kick up your feet and escape everything with this feel-good offering. With a warm embrace, the “Shortcircles” EP brings you into his blissful ambient hip hop world, fused with bits of vocal contributions. I’ve found myself zoning out to it, at least a couple times, each day. Do yourself a favor and take a listen.
