It was brought to my attention by Taiwanese Dancehall Queen and CB friend Ruby Red Li (CrayonBeats interview here) that there was a band that she thought I should give a listen to. After checking them out, I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised. MATZKA is a Taiwanese band that’s doing their part to spread the love and soul of Reggae music. The band was founded in 2008 and is comprised of four members from two of Taiwan’s Aboriginal tribes, Paiwan and Pei’Nan: Matzka (vocals & guitar), Nanwan (bass & vocals), Mavaliw (drums & vocals) and Sakinu (guitar & vocals). As a Reggae band from Taiwan, their sound is very unique with elemental mixtures from genres like Jazz, Rock, Blues and Hip Hop. Recently signed to major label Phoenix Music International, hopefully this can spread Taiwanese Reggae music to fans across the world.
