While this movie was released in 2004, I just watched it last night. It’s 3 short stories of extremes, and each movie segment is directed by a different horror director, from different countries.

Dumplings“, directed by Fruit Chan (Hong Kong). “Cut“, directed by Park Chan-wook (South Korea), and “Box“, directed by Takashi Miike (Japan).

I’ve seen a few Takashi Miike films in the last couple of months, and I’ve liked each one. I figured this would be just as good, particularly since it’s by three horror masters. And it was.

Dumplings” is about vanity. An aging actress goes to a woman for her secret dumplings that will help her regain her youth and beauty. I won’t tell you the special ingredient in the dumplings, but it’s disturbing and awful. The crunchy, squishy sounds as the woman ate the dumplings were crazy and chilling. This movie made my jaw drop, as it was very gruesome.

Cut” is about a horror movie director and an insane extra that has been in the director’s movies. The extra kidnaps the director and his wife, and terrorizes them. It was a crazy story, with twists and turns. It features amputation, torture, and child abuse. This segment was the most brutal and bloody of the three. And the situation the characters are put in reminded me of the movie “Saw”, but better.

Box” is a story about the accidental death of Kyoko’s sister. She has horrifying nightmares and has a hard time differentiating between her nightmares and reality. It was weird, thought-provoking, and had its creepy moments, but this movie was my least favorite of the three. Not that it wasn’t good, because it was real good… but the build-up was a little slow. And I wish it was a little longer, and dug deeper into the story. It’s the type of movie that has to be watched more than once, and the movie is left open for the viewer to interpret. Interesting and intriguing though!

Three…Extremes” as a whole was amazing. Each segment was shot beautifully, and the storytelling was brilliant in their own ways. This isn’t your ordinary scary ghost or slasher film, but more of an intelligent exploration of the horror genre. I recommend it. :]
