Hey guys and girls, I haven’t posted anything in awhile due to my laptop crashing the other weekend. But I’m back! I had to reformat it, so I lost everything. EVERYTHING. Oh well, what can ya do? Nothing. Moving on… I’m here to tell you about The Algebraists.
Apart of the familiar Audio Reconnaissance label, Emcee Yeti-One (of Twin Monster and Red Bus) and producer 90lbs (of Oreo Jones) make up The Algebraists. They released their debut album titled, “The Diamond Age“, on June 22nd, 2010. The overall sound of the album weaves between electronic and hip hop, with a video game vibe (and if you’re familiar with Yeti-One or 90lbs, you’d know that this is a change for the two of them). The album can be purchased on Amazon for $7.12, so check it out. And listen to their single, “Androids dream of electric sheep” below the jump…
Tracklisting:
01. And all the stars a stage
02. The diamond age
03. Androids dream of electric sheep
04. Diabologic
05. My name is Legion
06. Burning chrome
07. The last Theorem
08. Out of the silent planet
09. The stars my destination
Mini review: The second track, “The Diamond Age“, is fast-paced, both lyrically and on the beat. It gives the listener a taste of both the emcee and the producer, representing Indianapolis. Traveling to “Androids dream of electric sleep“, the track is powered by bleeps and boops, and hits the topic of the digital world. “Everybody’s making music, everybody’s got a website // Log-in in the morning, before they even get their head right“. It’s sad, but it’s reality. A lot of kids/people will hop on their computers (or video game consoles) the moment they wake up… before doing anything else. Before brushing their teeth, or taking a shower, or stepping outside. In a constant state of checking for new friends, new messages, hot topics on Twitter, and so on. Jumping to “The last theorem“, it starts out with some “Apocolypse Now” samples (side note: RIP Dennis Hopper), which sets the tone for the track. This is my favorite song on the album. The beat combines hums and claps, while Yeti-One breaks down the details of the cold world around him. “Every single night, the sun fucks the ocean // Now that’s devotion” starts off the final, and ninth, track… “The stars my destination” (second favorite track). Different from the others, this song has more of a chill vibe. The beat is beautiful, and sets the mood for the stars that light the path of Yeti’s return home. He even sings on the chorus, “For way too long, I’ve been out here all alone // I’ve found my favorite star, and now I’m coming home // It’s been way too long, I’ve been out here on my own // Now I know where you are, and so I’m coming home.” And the sample at the end is from the 1991 movie, “People Under The Stairs”.
I know Yeti-One and 90lbs worked their butts off on this album, particularly Yeti (he dropped a solo album too, which can be found below)… so show support and drop $7.12 on this album.
Purchase “The Diamond Age”!
And if you like free music, go listen to/download Yeti-One‘s free album, “I’ve Got Something I Don’t Want To Say To You” on bandcamp.
Gawd, that’s hot. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and at first beat my left eyebrow went up, but wow… I dig this electric sheep business. It took me back to Pac Man, even, in a way. Thanks for this.
It must be an epidemic. A month ago my computer crashed and had to be gutted and rebuilt, and this month, Terri’s is having to be rebuilt as we speak. And your laptop crashed too? *speechless*
Well, glad you’re back.
[...] Ligyro at Locals Only (I didn’t record this). Thought I’d share it, since I made a post about them not too long ago. Don’t forget to purchase their album, “The Diamond [...]
