Tone Liv, aka Da Mayor, is an emcee from New Jersey. He’s one half of the 2-man group, Remarkable Mayor with B Stilt. And he’s also in the Green Llamas collective (post on that later). Anyway, back to Tone… he dropped “Path Train to Jersey” (on Domination Records) as a free EP. There are 10 tracks total, and it features artists Sosh B. Cardi, Yoshi, and Doh Boy. Production from people like Vincent Price, Tha S Ence, Scotty Beans, and a few others.

A small write-up, the tracklist, and download link are after the jump…

Fifty-five seconds into the album, and I was already digging it. The intro, in that short amount of time, put me in this chill and serene state of mind. All it is, is the sound of a train rolling across the tracks, with a light instrumental on top. And it’s enough.

I think with an intro like that, it allows the listener to clear his/her mind… for the upcoming grimey tracks.

Third track (“Way of the World“) comes on and I was feelin’ the beat. I knew Vincent Price was on the roster, but I didn’t see which track he did. I just listened first. My initial thought… “Sounds like VP.” I looked, and it was. This song features both Sosh B. Cardi and Yoshi. Each verse starts out with something along the lines of “My brother’s in jail…“, and closes with bars about how ill they are and that they’re ready and determined for anything that comes their way – in that sense that they won’t let anything stop them. Or atleast, that’s what I got from it.

Doin My Numbers” is like a Tone Liv avalanche of rhymes. The gritty lines just keep tumbling, and while they’re rollin’ outta his mouth, it builds up… and abruptly stops. I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone but me, but whatever. Touches on things like: Anorexic vs his obese bars, the topcat vs him being the underdog… and he even spits beer in your face while he swims with the sharks. What!

The beginning, which is also the chorus, of “Mic Vick” describes what me and a good amount of the population are going through right now. “I can’t find a job for nothin!” Except, I’m not gonna rob anybody. Haha. But yeah, shit’s hard! And for a person getting into music, it can be even harder… especially if they’re just getting into the business and trying to make serious money from it. All the networking, all the legwork, putting yourself out there, etc. And I know artists get a lot less money when it comes to album sales these days, with all the album downloads (those that aren’t free by the artist or bought).

And just like the intro, the outro takes the same route with the train on traintracks, but this time you can hear people talking.

Anyway, download the album below and take a listen!
