Earlier today I was pointed towards the direction of a group based outside of LA called Late Bloomers. They haven’t been together very long (they were formed last year), but in the short time they’ve been together, they’ve managed to open for quite a few people including OH NO, Roc-C and Chino XL. They’ve also managed to put out a few EPs here and there; and their latest project, Growth Series 2, has “a Slum V/Sa-Ra sound”. Personally I’m not one for comparing artists to each other, but I will agree that their music is very much that jazzy/bluesy hip-hop sound that’s easy on the ears.
While listening to it, I actually found myself thinking I could start listening to more hip hop (gasp!) if it started to sound like this, and I was really feeling the music, and especially the lyrics…..that is until the N-bomb round-housed me. I’m not too keen on the word (regardless if it’s with an ‘a’ or an ‘er’) so it kinda left a sour taste for me on the otherwise amazing track. As someone who listens to music for the words (especially on the occasions that I find myself listening to hip-hop, I tend to listen more to what the artist is saying than the music behind them) in my mind, it *sorta* negated the whole high I was feeling from their intricate, and intellectual lyrics. Both lyrically and musically, I like what the Late Bloomers are bringing– but I feel like the song would have been better off without it, as in my opinion, it was out of place and unnecessary. But that’s just me. Other people probably don’t think so, and are totally cool with the word, and that’s fine too.
Anyways, enough of my droning. Take a listen for yourselves, and lemme know your thoughts on the track:
