Feb 2010 24

A father, a community organizer, and a rapper… I’ve talked about him before: Bambu. He grew up in Watts, California. And with all the negative energy that surrounded him, he chose to do something positive with it – he turned to music.

He just dropped his latest EP, “…Paper Cuts…” (on Beat Rock Music), on February 23rd.

What made me gravitate towards Bambu was that he always had/has something real to say. He’s able to rhyme about various social topics (political, economy, budget cuts, being a father, urban gangs, religion, racism, etc), and still have people nodding their heads along. Dope lyrical ability. He holds a lot of knowledge, and shares his thoughts always. He attends rallies, protests, and he stands up for everything he believes is right or wrong. He reaches out to the youth, to help them in any type of way. To move and support them, and anyone, who faced or faces the same issues he did.

His first release was a 2002 album titled, “Self Untitled“, which is where he gained a little buzz. After he released that, he joined up with Kiwi and formed the group, Native Guns. Check up on that if you get the time, by the way. His second solo album, “…I Scream Bars For The Children…“, was released in 2007. This is when I latched on to Bambu’s music. And that album is my favorite. In 2008, he put out his third album, “… Exact Change…” (you might’ve seen that “Crooks & Castles” video?).

Anyway, back to my original reason of the post. Bambu released “…Paper Cuts…” strictly to a few mom & pop shops in California – IMIX Bookstore (Los Angeles), Amoeba Music (Hollywood), and of course iTunes. It can also be previewed and purchased from the Beat Rock website. Gotta love bandcamp, man. You get to preview the entire album (whole songs), which is great. Because now I know what I’m purchasing or if it’s worth it. Which this is. I will be purchasing mine soon, because I love having hard copies. Yes!
