Vanessa Upson, or better known as Violetness, is an indie pop/rock songstress in Chicago. She’s half Peruvian, and a California native who moved to Chicago to work on her EP. It will be a four-song EP, with a few remixes included, that will be dropped sometime around the end of January or the beginning of February. With very few songs recorded, there are two three tracks floating around online. You can listen to them on her myspace, or download them at the end of my post.
Violetness has a unique singing voice. It’s so delicate and lovely. When I first heard “Nazca”, I was reminded of Bjork. The songs are both produced by Stefan Clark of Cassette Company. “Perfect Love Flow” is driven by drum poundings and snare hits, while “Nazca” is powered by handclaps. And her vocals are perfect for each beat. Effortless.
I came across her music from some other blog and was digging the way she sounded. I also read that she opened up for Eyedea & Abilities and Themselves. She’s into hip hop music. Infact, her first tape was Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Anyway, keep an eye out for her, and for music she creates in the future.
