Interview: Dumbo10

Dumbo is a 20-year-old dancer that lives in California. He started dancing in 2005, when he was 16. He was once apart of the crews Futureshock LA and Cultureshock LA, and currently Dumbo dances in SickStep, Poreotics, and Pac Modern. For those of you who don’t know, the dance styles he specializes in are popping, tutting, waving, and also some breakdancing. And his tutting (and also popping) is crazy! There are some videos at the bottom, so check ‘em out.
In between school, work, and dance (congratulations on getting 1st place for USA at HHI), Dumbo took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for us and you here at Crayon Beats.
Tiffology: Hey. How are you doing this week?
Dumbo: I am doing fine. Just got back from Vegas for Hip Hop International. 1st place in USA, 7th in the world.
Tiffology: I’m sure you get asked this frequently, but what made you choose the name Dumbo?
Dumbo: I can wiggle my ears.
Tiffology: How and what age did you begin dancing?
Dumbo: 16.
Tiffology: Random – What is your favorite icecream from the icecream truck?
Dumbo: Strawberry shortcake.
Tiffology: What are your favorite dance styles?
Dumbo: Popping and breaking.
Tiffology: What made you gravitate towards popping?
Dumbo: The illusion and musicality.
Tiffology: Random – Do you like to ride on rollercoasters or do things that give you an adrenaline rush?
Dumbo: Not sure… not a fan of rollercoasters.
Tiffology: Are you originally from California? If so, where?
Dumbo: Vietnam, to Houston, then to CA.
Tiffology: Who / what are your inspirations?
Dumbo: Many poppers…
Tiffology: You’re apart of the dance crew Poreotics. How did that start, and who’s in it?
Dumbo: I had a mindset of what to do with choreography. Right now there’s 6 members: Chad, Jetli, Charles, Can, Law, and me.
Tiffology: Awhile back, I remember seeing videos of you on youtube, where you were just meeting up with SickStep. I’m curious, how did it come about with you joining their crew?
Dumbo: I met them randomly and they asked me to be apart of it.
Tiffology: Random – What’s your astrology sign?
Dumbo: Aries.
Tiffology: You also went on America’s Got Talent with SickStep, and got the ticket to Vegas. How far did you guys make it?
Dumbo: Top 20.
Tiffology: What dance crews have you represented (now and in the past)?
Dumbo: Futureshock LA, Cultureshock LA, Sickstep, Pac Modern, Poreotics.
Tiffology: What do you like LEAST about dancing? What about MOST?
Dumbo: Least, dancing with no feelings. What I like most is musicality.
Tiffology: Being that Michael Jackson did a lot for the entertainment world, I feel that I should ask… where were you and what were your thoughts and feelings when you first heard that he died?
Dumbo: I was sad. All I did was listen to his music and it reminds me when I was little. Just very memorable things.
Tiffology: Your tutting is ridiculous! In general, how often do you practice dancing?
Dumbo: Whenever I have time. Right now not a lot because of school and work.
Tiffology: What are your feelings before you get on stage to perform? Do you do anything to prepare yourself?
Dumbo: I’d like to cypher before I go on, just to warm up.
Tiffology: Random – What are you listening to lately?
Dumbo: Electro house.
Tiffology: Have you had any injuries due to dance?
Dumbo: Not really…
Tiffology: You’re also a dance choreographer… how do you like teaching?
Dumbo: I LOVE teaching.
Tiffology: Where do you teach at?
Dumbo: Wherever I get booked…
Tiffology: Random – What were the last 3 movies you saw?
Dumbo: Hang Over, Fast n Furious (newest one), Tokyo Drift.
Tiffology: Do you have a specific genre or type of music that you prefer to dance to? Or does it not matter?
Dumbo: Electro, Electronica, and RnB.
Tiffology: What has dance done for you as a person?
Dumbo: To become successful.
Tiffology: Any memorable battles, sessions, or events?
Dumbo: Too many to even name…
Tiffology: I first came across you when I saw a video of you and Tony Tran battling it out… circa ’07, I think. So… battles. If you could battle ANYONE, that you haven’t already danced against, who would it be and why?
Dumbo: I’m not into battling.
Tiffology: What do you do in your free time, when you’re NOT dancing? Any hobbies?
Dumbo: I like vball. Umm, I like spending time with my girlfriend, if I have one. Other than that, I’ll be very bored.
Tiffology: Random – Do you have any pets? If so, what are their names?
Dumbo: Nope.
Tiffology: Have you travelled anywhere outside of California to dance? If not, would you like to?
Dumbo: Nope. I would love to. That’s our goal as a crew, to be able to travel and perform.
Tiffology: Random – Let’s talk about guilty pleasures. Any reality shows that you like to watch?
Dumbo: I don’t watch tv much.
Tiffology: Any competitions or events in the future, that you’d like to talk about?
Dumbo: Not really….
Tiffology: Advice or words of encouragement for anybody just getting into dance?
Dumbo: Just gotta have passion for it.
