Anjulie isn’t new in the game, but she’s just barely getting recognized now. I was going through a magazine of mine, reading the album reviews, when I came across the review of Anjulie’s “Advance” (2009, released on Hear Music). She had 2.5 stars of 5. Her music was classified as pop/indie pop… and not to mention, she’s lovely. So I became interested in hearing some of her music. To Youtube I went!

Anjulie grew up in Toronto, and was raised by immigrant parents from Guyana. She’s the youngest of four children. Her household was filled with everything from Afro-Caribbean calypso, reggae, South American Latin music, to the pop and rock that came from her older sibling’s radios. Anjulie met Jon Levine (keyboardist for Toronto’s funk-pop band Philosopher Kings) when she was 17 – hustling to catch a break, by interning at Metalworks recording studio. The two went out to lunch, and since those that work behind the desk weren’t allowed to hang out with clients, she was then fired. Soon Jon heard her perform at an open-mic night, which then led to their current partnership. In 2005, they started writing and recording songs.
“A unique, distinct voice, a certain vision and style, and definitely a treat for the eyes. However, in such a competitive music industry, this is not always enough, and I am not sure if Anjulie has the extra spark on Advance that is needed to be truly recognized.” – URB
Unfortunately, it’s a hit and miss situation with “Advance“. Some of the tracks are enjoyable, and others are forgetable. But I believe that she’s not someone that can’t make it happen. She’s got the right voice, and the right vibe. So be sure to check out for her and what she puts out next.

I like her! The Heart is really good. Her voice is different from what I thought it would be, but I like it. Does she have a myspace or official site?
Woops, my bad. I forgot to add that. Yes, I posted it just now.
I honestly can’t believe she got 2.5 stars out of 5 stars. Her CD rocks. I think she’s the new Nelly Furtado. I just wish they’d market a better song than Boom. Plenty of others to choose from. Great value on iTunes for $7.99 for the entire album. Great songs
