This is probably considered “old news” in the Kpop world, and I’d intended to post about this for about a month now, but I’m finally getting around to it. Anywho, If you don’t know, totally adorable Natalie White (27) aka Pumashock has taken over the Kpop blog-sphere, Korean netizen community and even made an appearance on the Korean television show Star King. How so? Well I’m going to assume you either don’t listen to Kpop or if you do, you’ve been in a coma for the past month and a half… but yeah, Miss Natalie’s rise to stardom all started on Youtube. Blessed Youtube. I tell ya’ Youtube is one helluva resource. Lemme see if I can break it down for ya:
Just like Esemee, Charice, and Phatfffat before her, Pumashock uploaded videos of herself on YT, just looking to have fun. But she’s so good and passionate about what she does, she quickly gained a slew of subscribers to her unique remixes of Kpop chart toppers. And that’s exactly what made her stand out from the countless cover songs on Youtube. And I’m not just talking about Korean covers, but the covers in any language. Most Youtubers just sang the original versions using the original instrumentals, but Pumashock took it one step further creating her own beats and melodies for fan favorites.
Two months after signing up on Youtube, she uploaded a slow jam-R&B version of SNDS‘s super hyper, mega catchy Gee. The result was word getting back to the original singers, who checked her out and loved it and from there, she ended up on Star King. That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. What’s so cool about this story is that Pumashock isn’t just gonna stick to doing covers: she’s writing her own original songs, so keep an eye on her blog for more info about when you can hear her stuff! I’m sure it’s gonna be great! Go Natalie!
