001So, you may or may not know that I love reading/collecting Japanese fashion mags, right? Well, previously I’ve never really purchased anything other than the more “urban” magazines, even though I still like some of the more prominent gyaru styles. Of course, LUIRE, which I’ve gushed about not once, but twice in the course of this blog is going to always be my favorite, however other than that, I’ve only previously purchased Woofin’ Girl and once I bought an issue of Blenda, but didn’t like it as much (probably because it was a special Beyonce issue….I might have had a Beyonce overdose that day. LOL) However, I thought I’d give a go at another publication, since it’s always good to be open to fashion right? I didn’t want any EGG or even ViVi, since those are more on the “extra” side for me…I opted for Jelly instead. It seems a little less “urban” than LUIRE but a little more “street” than say, ViVi. I like what I’m seeing so far.

According to ガルズプレス(GirlsPress), a site dedicated to Gal’s fashion, Jelly caters to “older sister” gals (20s and up) who still like that gyaru look, but since they’re a bit more sophisticated than their younger sisters, the fashions reflect that. Think of it as the way Cosmopolitan is the big sister to CosmoGirl. Same idea.

OK, so what’s to like about Jelly? Well for one, the styling is great. Like I said, they aren’t as bold as with the accessories and fashions as a regular gyaru magazine, but they still manage to capture the flare, just toned down and more accessible for real-world gals. 019Not saying the younger girls live in some fantasy world, but you know, with work, and all..it’s a bit tough to style-out at the office and still be taken seriously. Anywho, another aspect I like about Jelly is how it’s not like LUIRE in the diva-esque way with ‘Black Style’ but it’s still urban enough to stand apart from your everyday clothing choice. If you like the gyaru look, or are just ready for a change from your normal magazines, I’d suggest picking up a copy of Jelly on your next magazine run (as well as LUIRE lol).

This looks great! I love Japanese fashion too, and am wondering where you can purchase Japanese fashion mags? I was in a Japanese fashion store recently and they had magazines, but not for sale. :( I’ve looked online but all I find are subscriptions, and they’re so expensive! Where do you find yours?

Hi Erin! I get my fashion magazines from Kinokuniya which lets you order online, or you can purchase used/older magazines from Bookoff. Bookoff doesn’t have an online store, so you’d have to visit the store.

Thanks for stopping by the blog!
