In case you didn’t know, I’m a fan of Korean music..also, it’s been some time since I’ve listened to any; almost a year! So you can imagine my surprise when I checked my inbox this morning and found that a friend of mine sent me a little nudge about one of Kpop’s good Bad Girls. I was even more surprised that it was Jessica H.o no less. I guess you can say I call her a “good Bad Girl” because she’s like the girl in your crew who is a sweet heart, but she’s always up to something, and you KNOW it’s going to lead to trouble, but you’re so down for the ride. Also, I guess you can kinda say that I didn’t expect Jessica to really recover from her mistake a few years back, but she did…and apparently Life is Good.
As I said, a few years ago Jessica debuted in Korea with her single Get Up. I actually have this single, and it’s an alright debut single, but I’ll get back to that. Before I do however; I think a little back story is in need so you can understand my surprise. One of the things about Jessica, is that she was much more outspoken than her motherland counterparts. This in turn caused some drama when some questionable comments on her myspace page were spread around the internet, and with the intensity and wrath that is fanboy/girlism her career was shut down before it even really got a chance to take off. I’m talking drama on top of drama.
And while I do feel that some of her comments were way out of line ( no excuse for the N word, J…no excuse.) it’s not like she didn’t apologize for her naive actions. I’m not too sure about her realizing the usage of the N-word is a no go, and I’d like to get some clarification from her on that(no he say, she say, but from her…but we’ll see how that goes), but I did find out that she did take responsibility for her other statements, even though netizens weren’t tryna hear it. Hey, you gotta give her some credit for not hiding behind her celebrity. Right? Either way, she’s been laying low since then waiting for the storm to blow over.
Fast forward a few years later and Jessica has decided it’s time for her to come back to the scene. As I’ve said, a friend of mine put me on to her new digi single and a youtube performance of her comeback, and I must say, I’m impressed. The single, Life is Good, is a good up tempo R&B song with a sprinkle of Jessica’s strong rap and vocals. One of the things that I like about the song is the way she comes across on the track. That was one of the great things about her debut single Get Up. She’s very dominant in her vocals and doesn’t try to be all sweet and sugary, which is the path many singers of Kpop take. Her voice has also gotten better over the years as would be expected. Her raps seem to have gotten better as well, and in a way she kinda reminds me of the Korean queen of Hip Hop, Tasha when she raps, while her vocals are reminiscent of Lexy, one of the most underrated singer/rappers in Kpop.
As for her debut single, as I said it was good, but after listening to it again, I get the feeling that they didn’t know what to do with her…Get Up is a Pop/R&B track that’s sassy and cool, while 1,2 Step is painfully sugary…even the contrast in her performances is a little o.O. So you can imagine how glad I was that they didn’t try to make this “Bad Girl”
The only bad thing I have to say about the “gifts” from my friend is that I wish I hadn’t watched the performance, because it was kinda boring. With the energy of the song, I was expecting J to really wow me, but maybe it was nerves or something. Maybe her next performance will be more interesting? Either way, I hope she continues to make more music along this line and like her songs Get Up and Missin, and her ballads less like 1,2 Step.
Check out this little clip of her photoshoot I found for her Joy News article , where she does a little impromptu rap performance.
eh don’t like her.
