I didn’t even have to see the movie and I just KNEW that The Uninvited was a total remake *cough*rip off*cough* of one of my favorite horror movies. Which movie? Tale of Two Sisters. I really think I’m going to barf at how all of a sudden Hollywood seems to have lost all creativity and they continue to “remake” and destroy some really great horror movies from the East. Cases in point: The Ring, Red Eye, and The Eye.
All of these movies had their origins in Asian cinema and some genius of a director decided to remake them, turning them to garbage. I understand the directors feeling inspired by these original flicks, but I’m sorry. You cannot remake a horror movie from Asia and think it’s going to have the same effect. Why? Well for one, culturally, it’s nearly impossible to get the same feeling in an American horror film. I’ve been watching horror flicks from Japan and South Korean for some time now, and I’ve noticed that a lot of their stories are psychological horror as opposed to actual blood and gore, which has been the norm in American films. While I applaud that American horror films are trying to scope out a new angle at the scaring people, you can’t take a stories that are culturally based and try to put your American spin on it. Only one of two things will happen: you’ll either end up making it a train wreck or you’ll be left with a film that is kinda scary, but more wtf. See, a lot of these Asian horror films have their roots in urban legends, and folklore, so it really translates well onscreen with the director, actors, and everyone else involved.
Think about it. Imagine watching a foreign film’s take on an American urban legend such as Bloody Mary. That story is known by almost all Americans, and yeah a foreign director can learn of the story, but to watch their take on it would be very disappointing…especially when you know how terrifying it was to be dared to go into the bathroom with the lights off and look in the mirror while saying her name. It just wouldn’t feel right. It would probably be creepy, but not the way you’d expected to be creeped out. It’s the same with remaking others urban legends/horror stories.
Also, another thing I’d like to say is, what’s so bad about putting subtitles if you really want people to see it. Are we that lazy that reading subtitles will put us off? Plus I think being open to other “genres” of movies is much needed in America. It’s insane how much talent there is in the world, but so many people don’t even know about it because it’s not readily available. Tsk Tsk.
As for the original movie, Tale of Two Sisters, I highly recommend you watch it before you see The Uninvited. And even if you have no plan to see it, you should check out Tale of Two Sisters.
